David McHew watched his son drive away and turned back to the house, climbing the staircase to his own father’s room.

Edward’s chair was facing the door. He addressed his son when he entered.

“Well?”

David sat down in a small armchair against the wall and sighed before answering. “Well, she has blood all right. Not much – she doesn’t know it herself – but it is there…Which probably means that she is the most suitable person we could have hoped to have, as the first outsider to be told about us.”

His father nodded appreciatively. “We are fortunate. What else?”

David squinted keenly at the elder for a second. “Is she pregnant?”

Edward broke into a broad grin. “Very good. You don’t have much to learn.”

“So?”

“So, nothing. We don’t tell him. I know that it would make it easier for him if he knew, but this is the test of our new strategy of survival, and since this girl is already more suitable than we can expect any others to be, we should leave it. They will all have to find the courage to gamble their happiness with outsiders and Paul should be the same, especially as the first.”

“I agree. If he can do it without help, the others should be able, too.”

“But,” continued Edward, “he can not wait for long. He will soon start to slow down – he is no longer an adolescent. The presence of his child will ensure it.”

David nodded, but sympathy for his son’s predicament made him speak again. “Yet, will that not smooth his path?”

Edward shook his head vigorously. “No. We can not tell him. You are right. It would make it easier, but also easier to shirk his responsibility. He must not try to hide it, something he would be tempted to if he knows that eventually the change will occur. She must accept us.”

The old man stood up and walked to the window. The darkness outside was masked by the reflection of the room in the glass. He turned back to his son. “When I came here, I vowed, on the memory of all our dead, that I would ensure the survival of our people and our heritage. I won’t allow anyone to stray, to take the easy option of concealing who they are. I will not have children growing up with no knowledge of themselves, ending up in asylums!”

David held up his hands. “I know. I know the dangers. But don’t you think that Paul is strong enough to know this too? That he has to tell her, despite the possibility of not needing to?”

Edward sighed, relaxing after his burst of emotion, then smiled and nodded: “I think that he is strong enough, and I am proud of him. But I am not going to test him all the same. It is better for him to believe there is no alternative.”
